RAF 1940 pattern, chemical heated flying gloves.

Air Ministry stores Ref. No. 22C/425-430 (size unknown).

These scarce chemically heated flying gauntlets are made of sheepskin with a fleece lining. Leather pieces are stitched in the gussets between the fingers and the whole of the thumbs. A leather adjustable strap, with press studs, is fitted near to the wrists. Inside is sewn a proofed cotton pocket (to each glove) which holds a chemical 'everhot' bag. This heats up when water is added and can last as long as six hours. In practice these gloves were not liked. They proved to be rather bulky and heat burns on the back of the hands often occured, and they were soon to be superseded by the 1941 pattern.

This pair of gloves are in a pretty good condition. There are a couple of minor bits of damage (see photos) but otherwise the gauntlets are in a good condition. Unlike a lot of examples, this pair still retain their inside pockets.
