This is a superb Renaissance silver-gilt devotional pendant, dating to the 16th - 17th century. It depicts the archangel Michael, victoriously brandishing his sword and shield. The pendant is modelled in the round, with the wings attached to his back with a single peened rivet. The main body is mercurial gold gilded, with the wings being ungilded silver to give contrast. Such a pendant would have been worn attached to a chain, one of the 'S' shaped fittings remaining. A very handsome and rare protective object, worthy of a good collection or museum display.
