A beautiful and rare silver and mother of pearl aide-memoire complete with ivory leaves and original pencil. French and dating to about 1785.
There is a different glazed design each side consisting of bunches of wheat. One side particularly beautiful with a green background and the wheat having little gold tips. Both these designs are beautifully constructed and are in lovely condition. Inscribed in silver is "Souvenir" on one side and "d'amitie" on the other side. In this case possibly a present from a young man to his lady friend. The silver decoration is beautifully bright-cut with fine designs on both sides.
The etui opens with a hinged top and there are two ivory leaves and a tiny fitted pencil with a silver finial.
These little gems were used by ladies' when at a ball, to note possible invitations by young men, to participate in a dance. They would be kept in their reticules or the pocket of their gowns.
The condition of this lovely item is excellent and would be a valuable addition to a costume collection of this era.
