A huge, double ended, lignum vitae pestle. This is unusual in that the ends are lignum vitae and the handle is boxwood. It is nicely turned and it dates from c.1820. Lignum vitae is an exceptionally hard wood, ideal for use for pestles. This example has wear to the ends, from use, and there are a couple of small woodworm holes which have been treated, but generally it is in very good condition.
