Fabulous court mortar with stand

Fabulous court mortar with stand

Code: F19444

SOLD

A stunning, grey marble mortar complete with a double ended boxwood pestle and an oak stand.  These would have originally been used in the kitchens of a chateau or stately home. The stand is earlier than the pestle and mortar but they do fit together perfectly.

The marble mortar is a very pale grey with a darker grey grain and it dates from c.1820. It measures 38cm. across by 21.5cm high. There are a couple of small chips on the rim but otherwise it is in good condition .

The boxwood pestle is 34cm. long and it is contemporary with the mortar. The stand is turned from a solid piece of oak and is more than a century earlier, dating from the late 17th century. It is 55cm. high by 24cm. diameter. The wood has dried out over the centuries. This has resulted in numerous cracks but this has been rectified by the addition of steel bands to the top and bottom. The wood has a wonderful patina.

The faults can all be seen in the images.  The piece is full of character and would make a superb addition to a large kitchen.
