A very interesting, carved sycamore cheese board. Although this is similar in style to the Victorian breadboards, and has similar carving, it would have been for cheese rather than bread. It would not really have been large enough for bread and the slopping sides would allow the crumbs to fall onto the table, so it would be very impractical. It is possible that it was carved to go with a breadboard. The border is carved with the words 'WASTE NOT WANT NOT' , and wheat, against a textured background. The wood has an attractive, pale patina and the piece is in very good condition. It dates from c.1880.
