A really good quality, French copper daubiere or brasing pan. Originally, this type of pan was designed to be used on an open fire or a range. Hot coals were placed into the lid so the contents cooked slowly from both above and below. Some people say that you steamed your vegetables in the lid but this is not correct. The lids were never tinned on the top so they were never designed to contain food. Often they will be pitted from where the coals have been in them.
This example is very well made, from a heavy gauge of copper. It has castellated seams around the base and up the side and it dates from c.1860. The handles are very nicely shaped and they are cast in brass. The piece is in excellent condition and the interior has been re-tinned, so that it can be used.
