This is a good large carafe - If filled to the brim it will hold 4 bottles (3 litres), but it is a comfortable 3-bottle carafe. Like many such items, usually fittted with stoppers, therefore decanters, it was made in northern France, probably Normandy where they were originally used for cider.
Many French carafes and decanters of this type had single neck rings, often at the base of the neck, but this example never had that feature and looks better for it.
The carafe is bright and clear with no chips or cracks and is eminently fit for purpose.
French, c.1860-80. 13.7” (34.7 cm.) high.
