I have wanted a four-leaf clover wine label for some years, but have not seen one at a price I wanted to afford - until I bought this!. Very heavily cast in silver and gilded it is naturalistically modelled as a four-leaf clover with the legend 'CLARET' in 'white' silver overlaying the leaf as part of the casting.
It was made by Benjamin and James Smith who did much of their work for Rundell, Bridge and Rundell under Royal patronage. They are particularly known for exceptionally high quality pieces in silver gilt and this label falls into that category.
This label must have been made in 1809, between 23rd. February, when James Smith entered into partnership with his brother Benjamin, and May 19th when the London assay office dateletter changed from 'N' to 'O'
The label is in fine original condition and is suspended from a heavy-weight belcher chain.
Dimensions: 2.3", 56 mm. wide
