The concept of the 'Deception' table is thought to have originated with the Gillow firm. A design for a 'Deception' table appears in the Gillow Estimate Sketch Books for June/July 1787, (Westminster City Archives 94/44-5)
and a related type of deception table (L. Boynton, (ed.), Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, Royston, 1995, fig. 28).

Thomas Sheraton in his The Cabinet Dictionary, London, 1803 noted that the 'Deception' pembroke table was 'to answer the purpose of a pot
cupboard, or any other secret use which we would hide from the
eye of a stranger.
