An excellent 19th century Japanese writing cabinet of unusual design, small proportions and profusely decorated; the shaped back with a dragon scene and gilt finials to the corners, above a pair of serpentine panelled doors depicting lions in a landscape, the decorated interior with a central shelf and two small drawers. The bureau section with a through drawer accessible from both sides, the hinged slope revealing a writing surface with its original embossed velvet lining, also with inkwells, pen tray and a hinged compartment. The central kneehole is flanked by a pair of doors decorated with whimsical tigers, housing four drawers on either side. All raised on shaped bracket feet. The sides of the cabinet with large recessed shaped panels depicting deer, rabbits and squirrels on a scarlet red background. The finely engraved metalware is silver plated which is appropriately showing the copper base.
Excellent condition Note: the cabinet dismantles into five sections for convenience.
