Karel Appel (1921-2006) was a leading post-war avant garde painter and sculptor. Following his studies at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam in the 1940s  he became  part of the CoBrA  group along with artists like Corneille, Constant, Asger Jorn and Christian Dotremont. They broke with notions of both naturalism and abstraction and sought a more spontaneous and experimental freedom in art, often inspired by the art produced by  young children. The work of CoBrA artists like Appel has affinities with that of Tachisme and abstract expressionism. These artists have been described as the last avant-garde movement. Appel’s work is found in leading museums worldwide including MoMA and Tate Modern
