An amazing Victorian silver and glass desk inkset, made in London in 1893 by John Grinsell & Son. The two hobnail cut glass inkwells are engraved with the crest of the 4th Duke of Sutherland Cromertie Sutherland-Leveson-Gower KG (1851-1913). The set has several hallmarks on the silver and each piece is individually screwed onto the base so they can be removed for cleaning. The inkwells have original inner glass liners used to conserve ink. The central glass bowl has a brush which is probably used for dusting the ink after it has dried on the letter. Overall the ink stand is in exceptional condition with only two tiny nibbles on the base of one inkwell and very slight marks to the bakelite base. There are four silver penholders (one might be a replacement) and the silver fret cut gallery has four feet on which the set stands.
