The Battle of Britain 75 Years ago today - more aircrew lost...
Friday 12th July 1940. After an attack by a He110 the Hurricane of 85 Squadron pilot Sgt. L Jowitt (see photo) crashed into the sea never to be seen again. Flying officer J.H.L Allen's 151 Squadron Hurricane was shot down by a Do17 over Orfordness, ditching in the sea. His body was never recovered. Likewise, Pilot Officer D.A. Hewiit of 501 Squadron was shot down over Portland in his Hurricane. He remained missing despite a search by lifeboats.
Finally a dogfight training accident resulted in the death of 610 Squadron pilot Sergeant S. Ireland after he lost control of the aircraft. They will not be forgotten
