RAF Mk.IX spectacles, cased with 'spares'

Spectacles, Mk.IX.  Stores reference 22c/994.  This pattern of spectacle was issued only with clear prescription lenses for use by aircrew who needed glasses.  Yes, men with 'defective' eyesight did fly in WW2!  Manufactured with a cellulose acetate frame and two alternative sidepieces.  They could be worn with removeable 'skull fit' steel sidearms or short loop-ended metal sidepieces joined via a black elastic strap.  These sidepieces had perforations along them intended to dig into the helmet thus providing more grip in use. This pair has a very good frame and sidearms.  The lenses have a little delamination but display very well. The short looped sidearms are also excellent and the elastic retains good elasticity.  Both sets of arms are engraved with stores reference details, owner's name and service number.  Theu come in the original velvet lined vinide covered steel case and instruction sheet.  Perhaps not the most stylish of aviation eyewear but now incredibly difficult to find.  This is only the 2nd pair of Mk.IX's we have had in 31 years.  Very very rare indeed.   Stock code DFGFIX.
