Stores reference 21B/116, RAF Clock, Bracket, Small. More commonly referred to as the RAF Officers' Mess mantel clock although these clocks almost certainly saw wider use throughout RAF stations. Free standing oak cased clock with an 8-day single fusee movement. The case measures approximately 23 x 35.5 x 14cm and is, in our opinion, of better proportions than the larger "Sergeants' mess" mantel clock. The 14cm dial is in good condition, engraved with a King's crown RAF crest of very unusual design, Roman numerals and chapter ring. Fitted with the original blued steel hands (light surface corrosion). Cast brass bezel with convex glass opens via a small brass 'button' on the left of the case. The movement is accessed via a door at the rear of the case. This can be locked and comes with the key. The movement is signed by F.W. Elliott, has the serial number '2557' and is 1937 dated. It is clean, comes with the original pendulum, is currently running strongly and keeping good time. The case is in generally very good condition with original varnished finish. The dial has a 'silvered' finish and the numerals, crest and chapter ring are picked out in black. A scarce and desirable clock that will have seen use thoughout the war and beyond. Worthy of any collection, it comes with keys for winding and rear access door. Faint marking to the base in pencil reads 'LWJ 1.8.39' - possibly when it was serviced. This item is both heavy and delicate. Collection is preferred but we will pack with care and post worldwide if required. Stock code C28061.
