RAF 'Hand Flying Kite And Aerial'. We believe these kites were issued for use as an antenna in conjunction with the radio on Airborne Lifeboats (aircraft dropped). The Conyne pattern is constructed using three telescopic aluminium spars which locked into position when extended, thus keeping the white cotton sail cloth taut. When erected the kite measures approximately 125cm wide x 115cm top to bottom. The 'air pocket' at the front extends about 50cm when in use. These kites were supplied in a stiff cardboard tube along with an inner card tube/handle wound with cord for flying and copper aerial wire.
This example is in reasonable condition. Two of the telescopic tubes are broken and were taped in order to take these photographs but it should be possible to effect a better permanent repair. The sailcloth is a little grubby but generally in good order without damage. There appears to be a substantial amount of flying cord and aerial wire remaining along with a split ring and earthing cable. The main container is worn and the illustrated label with construction/flying instructions is rather tatty. Nevertheless, the kite displays well and this model is considerably rarer than the standard M-357-A box kites normally found. Stock code S22050.
