I was taken to Chartres Cathedral as a child as we had cousins living nearby, and the rich blues of the famous stained-glass windows in that darkened space made a deep and lasting impression on me. The gold diagonal line refers to the beam of light which falls on a particular stone at the Summer Solstice. This was shown (and well received by many) at Chichester Cathedral, which is twinned with Chartres.
