Out of the Shadows: Artist’s Statement 2022
Following the same trajectory as “Darkness into Light, my major show in Chichester Cathedral last year, the work has progressed with a lighter palette and a feeling of joie de vivre. Coming out of the pandemic, travels to Greece and Saint Lucia have filled my eyes with brightness and colour, and these have found expression in my work. The painting: “Out of the Shadows” exemplifies this. As my work is abstract, colour is not used in a literal way but for its impact, its means of communicating beyond words. There is an ongoing fascination in my practice with the duality of ‘surface and depth’. I continue to use a textured plaster ground to draw attention to the painting as a physical object whilst painting over the rough surface, paradoxically, in order to imply depth. “Back to Blue” is a meditative piece, which draws the eye in through imaginary portals. “Easter” is also a serious work, with its allusions to death and resurrection. Other paintings, like “Bring me Sunshine”, with its gold and pink, are deliberately ‘superficial’ and are intended only to convey happiness to the viewer, through colour. |
